Educational Apartheid

Still Seperate, Still Unequal: America's Educational Apartheid

  • "All people are due equal education and everything else that goes along with maintaining a healthy society"(2).
  • "Its more like being hidden" (3).
  • "Its as if you have been put in a garbage where, if they don't have room for something but aren't sure if they should throw it out they put it there where they don't need to think of it again"(4).

"Music makes me lose Control"

Growing up in a Christian household I wasn't really allowed to listen to much other than Gospel or Contemporary Christian music. So when the time came that my mom started to allow me to listen to other types of music I didn't know what to do. I tried to listen to every type of music out there and most of it I still listen to now. I never really had a favorite genre of music. I'm pretty much open to try out any type of music and I'll know if I like it by how long it takes for me to change the song or look up the lyrics. My favorite artists at the moment are probably between Sam Smith and Jhene Aiko. I love their voices and their sound all around its really hard to find a song they sing that I don't like.

#SocialMediaandMe

Okay so this may sound bad but I use some form of social media EVERYDAY I find myself constantly switching back and forward between Snapchat, Twitter, and Instagram. I use social media several times throughout the day and most likely scrolling through the different pages is what I do right before I go to sleep at night. Some may say its bad but I think it all depends. I mean I know a lot of people but I don't hang out with all of them I can almost say I don't really have friends, but then I hear my mother's voice "Why do you follow them if they aren't your friends?" Then I have to explain to her for the fiftieth time. I don't know I just like social media I like looking at other people's lives and sharing opinions with people who have common interest to mine, its fun.

A preference to writing

So I have always felt as though I am a really well writer. I've never had too much of a problem with writing essays or responding to any prompts in school unless I know absolutely nothing about the subject; even then I might make something up just so that I don't fail miserably. It might sometimes take me a while to get started with writing but the problem I seem to face often is putting an end to my writing. I am naturally a very talkative person so there isn't really much difference when I go to respond to an assignment that is given. I especially like to do free writes in class because it allows me to get all my thoughts out. I often do this with my journal entries. I'll go to write in my journal one day and end up writing as if I was literally speaking to the journal. I don't think it will be too much of a problem I actually think it is a pretty good problem to have, but I probably could take a chill pill every now and then. I feel like I didn't get that much practice with writing during my senior year. My English teacher didn't challenge us at all they assumed most of us wouldn't want to do the work so they didn't give us any work. I believe I wrote once my senior year and that was a college essay which might I add was pretty darn good in my opinion. It was messed up but I am more than confident that in college I get all the help and practice I will need.

A Naomi by any other Name

If I had to make a list of all the nicknames I've been given over the years I would be writing for hours. Quite honestly I can't even begin to remember them all but just to name a few: I got the nickname "Omi" from my cousin Darren. He was the first and only person to use this nickname for me. Another nickname that I received from a family member was my cousin Sherri or "Cousin Mommy" as I call her was the name "Holly" . I got this name because apparently when I was a baby and a family member held me I would eventually start to holler. Finally my favorite, "Chipmunk" this is a more recent addition. Back in about the 5th grade my friends at the time and I were trying to think of animal that we looked similar to. Now that I think about it that was pretty dumb. So it got to me and someone said chipmunk. Now people always commented on how cute and fluffy my cheeks were; however, no one EVER compared me to a chipmunk, and I found that cool because if I'm going to be an animal I would much rather be a cute one.

Naomi's favorite Past Time

When I'm not studying or hanging out with friends my absolute favorite thing to do is play with makeup. Most people I talk to about makeup don't understand how much I love makeup or why I love it so much. I think people are quick to say "Oh you're so pretty, you don't need to wear makeup." The thing is I don't wear makeup because I feel like I need it I just like using it. The whole thrill of trying new products or learning new techniques for makeup application is just really exciting to me. I've done many of my friend's makeup over the past few years as I was learning and they all had nothing but positive things to say and so did those who they showed pictures to. The following pictures are just a few looks I've done that I am very proud of:

My relationship with Sports

I was never really an athletic person I tried to play soccer when I was a kid. I eventually quit the team once I got hit in the face with the ball during a game. So needless to say I don't play any competitive sports. The closest I've been to playing a sport since then was dancing ballet, tap, and jazz at Miss Roseanna's School of Dance. However, if I were to play a sport right now I would play volleyball. I enjoyed playing volleyball during gym class in high school and was told that I'm good. I know that I would not play well under pressure so I'll continue to play for pleasure.
